Expression of the intangible: elements and words that spread into space
Carl Andre (1935–2024) is one of America's leading sculptors, known for his minimalist sculptures and installations. In the 1950s, he began to create three-dimensional works combining wood, influenced by Brancusi, and in the studio he shared with Frank Stella for a time, he was influenced by Brancusi's minimalist use of color and line. His works, in which industrial materials such as blocks, stone, wood, and metal were placed directly on the floor, expanded the possibilities of expression in sculptural form and space. This exhibition will introduce not only his sculptural works, but also his lyrical creative activities, and will be his first solo exhibition at a museum in Japan. The lyrics, which are made up of fragmentary words typed on a typewriter, reflect the spatial and structural awareness that informs his sculptures, as well as the artist's own wide-ranging thoughts, including literature, art, history, and politics.
